Putting community gardens on the map

Open Street Map is hosting several events for Geography Awareness Week, one of which we've helped organize: Map Community Gardens on Open Street Map.

WHEN: Saturday, 11/22, 12pm-3pm
WHERE: The Bark Room, Ground Floor, Parsons School of Design, 2 west 13th street, New York, NY (map)
Open Street Map is "a map of the world, created by people like you and free to use under an open license." Unlike Google Maps, OpenStreetMap data is generated and owned by everybody. That means you can edit what the map says about your garden, like Wikipedia. Some community gardens are currently up there, but not all, and the ones that are up are labeled as "parks" or other not-very-useful labels. Since community gardens in NYC are *still* not very well protected, it's important to maintain this kind of documentation.
So we're hosting a day to fix the map and make sure community gardens in NYC are represented (correctly). Updated garden location information has been generously provided by GrowNYC (thank you Lenny!!). NYCCGC will be there. Anyone can come - you don't need any experience mapping, someone there will show you how. You do, however, need to bring your own laptop.
RSVP here! Come map with us!
