Council Hearing on Wednesday, July 25 @ 1:30 PM at City Hall
The proposed NYU expansion on the site of the Morton Williams supermarket (S.E. corner of La Guardia & Bleecker Street) will cast a permanent shadow on the LaGuardia Corner Gardens, destroying many of the gardens' plants and trees. NYU's plans to use the garden as a staging area for their construction site for the next 3 years will also disrupt and damage this thriving community garden.
NYCCGC stands with the gardeners and opposes any action that would damage this garden beyond repair or destroy it entirely.
According to an article in The Local, NYU is actively looking for a place to move the garden, to which Sara Jones, the chair woman of LaGuardia Corner Gardens, responds, “How do you replace something that’s been there for 30 years? How do you replace my apple and peach tree?”

As Charles Krezel of Loisaida United Neighborhood Gardens (LUNGS) and NYCCGC says, "Loisaida United Neighborhood Gardens (LUNGS) is totally opposed to the takeover of Greenwich Village by NYU . This planned ‘educational’ expansion onto public lands and the complete disregard for the concept of open, green space is completely unacceptable. NYU's plans are an attack on the health and welfare of the gardeners and residents of Greenwich Village."
