9/1: Harlem Green, 7th Annual Tour of Harlem Community Gardens—Old and New

HARLEM GREEN, 7th ANNUAL TOUR OF HARLEM COMMUNITY GARDENS—OLD AND NEW
(A labor of love, Labor Day Weekend event)

Community garden-building has long been a labor of sweat, tears and love in Harlem and elsewhere in NYC, and no community garden was ever founded without a serious struggle. Moreover, maintaining community green space and growing food, locally and organically (read, non GMO), is more critical than ever in an age when giant corporations threaten to genetically modify our food and turn our green spaces into skyscrapers.

Harlem’s gardeners have been pioneers and visionaries when it comes to a healthy urban landscape. They recognize that innovative community gardens and urban farms are the future of our densely populated urban areas.

Thus, on Saturday, September 1, 2012 (rain date, Sunday, September 2), Harlem gardeners will host HARLEM GREEN, the 7th annual tour of Harlem farms and gardens. Tourists will see lush oases with verdant flora and fauna, rain water harvesting systems, solar pond aeration and lighting, vertical gardens, established fruit trees, abundant and unique vegetables, grape arbors and more. Some gardens began over 25 years ago on what was then sun-parched and rubble-strewn abandoned city lots. Tourists will also visit new gardens where neighbors have come together to sow wildflowers, excavate and reclaim abandoned debris-strewn lots.

The Tour will begin at 10:00 AM with a sumptuous breakfast on West 122nd Street at the JD Wilson Memorial garden. Thanks to the NYC Parks Department, a bus will transport folks (who aren’t walking or bicycling) on the Tour. The grand finale will again take place at the William A. Harris Garden with, this year, a celebration of peach cobbler—since the Harris gardeners will be holding their annual Peach Cobbler Bake-Off.

Sponsors for the event include The Green Guerillas; Greenthumb and The Parks Dept. of NYC; The William A. Harris Gardeners; NYCCGC (The NYC Community Garden Coalition); Project Harmony, Inc.
