Ave and the boardwalk. Subways n,d,q,f to the last stop: Stillwell Ave. Walk to the Boardwalk and then west to W. 22nd (towards and past the parachute jump- next to the historic child's building).
The story, from a Boardwalk Garden gardener:
The Boardwalk Garden was a composting site for Parks and then became a community garden in the 1980s. Later, when over 25 other community gardens were destroyed in Coney Island, the Boardwalk Garden was designated to be a permanent garden. However when the city started to build the MCU stadium nearby in 2000 they wanted the land back for additional parking, and moved the gardeners to a nearby site. When the replacement site was dissatisfactory, a handful of gardeners returned, as the boardwalk garden land was sitting there dormant. During the Coney Island Redevelopment talks of the late 90s, attention was given to the site as a community garden which wasn't being used much. At this point, Green Guerillas stepped in to help the site get organized. Since that time, the garden has become a community farm, producing thousands of pounds of food annually for gardeners, their families and community. Most recently Marty Markowitz has expressed interested in creating an open air concert venue at the site. The garden is currently preparing to fight for it's preservation.
This meeting continues NYCCGC’s summertime tradition of taking our message of community garden unity to locations throughout the city – it’s a great opportunity for all to connect with fellow gardeners and for us to hear firsthand what is affecting our gardens. Come tell us what’s going on in your garden!
