See complete notes here

-      Gardeners from flooded gardens in Coney Island and the Lower East Side came to share stories and voice their concerns and needs

  • Lots of fallen trees
  • Need help borrowing tools and coordinating volunteers
  • Many structures need to be rebuilt

-      Edie and Carolin from GreenThumb (GT) were present

  •  has a crew running on 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week to deal with all the trees that have fallen. The hurricane claimed more than 40,000 trees in the parks.
  • Sending clean up crews to remove sand and debris from Coney Island gardens
  • Gardens with major fallen trees can contact Shawn Spencer directly and GT will send in a crew to deal with the issue
  • GT is currently not repairing structures right now (casitas, gazebos, etc.), first focusing on the trees. If GT gets additional funds, it may be able to replace things that are lost or damaged.
  • For specific storm-related garden issues you can reach out to Edie directly, or contact your borough’s outreach coordinator
  • Edie hopes there is sufficient soil to give away. On Dec 1st there will be a soil give-away. 40 bags of soil per garden.

- Gerard Lordahl from GrowNYC was present

  • GrowNYC has been facilitating donations of bags of food from Greenmarkets
  • GrowNYC can help out in the clean-up by offering to lend out wheel barrels, tool boxes, giving out gloves, plastic buckets.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t lend out power tools. Those have to be operated by our staff. (Same w/ GT)
  • Borrow tools from the Grow Truck
  •  For assistance contact Gerard at GrowNYC or call at 212 227-2888
  • TreesNYC has a lot of trees they are willing to give to gardeners.
  • Gerard said that for about $20 per cubic yard, gardeners can have soil delivered – comes out to $800 per truck including delivery. Make sure the truck can back up into the garden to make the delivery in the garden.
